How to Properly Protect Your Golf Cart and ATV

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

Did you know that golf carts and ATV sales skyrocketed during the pandemic? Of course, they did! What else were we going to do?

These vehicles are great for passing time during a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, but what are the insurance implications for using these vehicles? Are you protected with your homeowner's insurance or are you exposed? Are your kids protected if they use the vehicle?

Our in-house expert, Nicole Ancog, did a video recently telling the story of someone who thought their ATV was protected by their homeowner's policy but was not.

If you own an ATV or golf cart, that vehicle is likely protected under your homeowner's policy with one major caveat: The vehicle is protected when it is on your property! This is extremely important to remember.

How often have you seen a kid driving a golf cart in a neighborhood? Probably a lot. That golf cart (and family) are very likely not insured. If a terrible accident occurs and the owner of the vehicle's child injures another person in any way, shape, or form, that family is not protected and liable for any damages.

Don’t get me wrong, we LOVE golf carts and ATVs. How else would Sean get his deer out of the woods and Louis get to the next hole on the goal course? However, these vehicles provide a unique level of exposure from an insurance perspective that needs to be managed.

If you own one of the vehicles, the most important thing you can do is call your insurance agent and find out exactly how you can insure your vehicle. It can save you a big headache and a lot of money down the road. If you have more questions, give us a call and our team can help: (478) 745-7200.
