Here’s What You Should Ask Your Insurance Agent (Even If It’s Not Us)

When most people talk to an insurance agent for the first time, they don’t know where to begin. How do you know if the agent or company is any good? How do you know they are truly looking out for your best interest instead of trying to make a quick sale? Maybe you already have an insurance agent but are not sure if that agent sold you the right policy or not. Here are three great questions to ask.

Did you shop my policy around for the right coverage and best price?

One of the big secrets in the insurance industry is most insurance agents do NOT do this for one simple reason: They can’t. The majority of insurance agents and companies are “captive”. This means they can sell insurance policies from only one company. Roland, Abbott, & DeZoort is a non-captive, independent agency that shops your policy with DOZENS of companies to ensure you get the right insurance policy. This applies to homeowners, life, auto, farm, and business. If your agent can't do this, you’re probably not getting the best deal.

Is my policy updated to reflect changes in my life?

An important general rule for any kind of insurance: If there’s been a life change, your insurance likely needs to change as well. Maybe you own a business and your customers have been shifting to online sales due to COVID and you’ve purchased more delivery trucks. Your business insurance needs have changed. Maybe you’re a family of three that is about to be a family of four. Your life insurance needs have changed. Maybe you're making more money than you expected but still have the same state minimum auto insurance. Your insurance needs have definitely changed. Staying on top of life changes will protect you in the long run.

What are your certifications?

Insurance agents have to obtain proper certifications to be considered a licensed agent. In addition to this, some of our agents have gone back for additional training to better serve our clients. Amanda Roland, one of our founding partners, just completed a certification making her the local expert on workers comp issues. Agents that have gone above and beyond to further their education are better prepared to help protect their clients.

If you're not a client of ours, give us a call. We would love to answer these questions and any others you may have.
